Strike lands fliers in a soup

Hundreds flying Kingfisher from Calcutta were inconvenienced on Thursday as the staff of an agency hired by the airline for ground handling operations went on a flash strike in the afternoon.
Airport officials said more than 100 employees of the agency struck work around 3pm as they were yet to receive their salary for March. Till late in the evening, no flight was delayed.
Passengers of an international flight to Dhaka and eight domestic flights to Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and other destinations had to get their registered luggage scanned on their own at the airline’s luggage X-ray counters.
“The airline’s staff had to do baggage handling in the absence of the employees of the hired agency,” said an airport official.
The agency, apart from handling passenger luggage at the X-ray counter, has also been assigned the task of loading and unloading luggage and installing aerobridges and ladders for passengers and crew to board or get off an aircraft.
“We are yet to receive our salary for March although it’s the middle of April. Everybody is buying gifts for Poila Baisakh but we can’t,” said a striking employee of the agency.
“We are running flights on schedule by bringing in additional staff and handling the passenger baggage ourselves,” said a Kingfisher official.
