Passenger loses battle with airline over non-vegetarian menu

Bangalore: A passenger’s petition against Kingfisher Airlines, seeking compensation from it for not serving him vegetarian menu during a flight from London to Bangalore, was dismissed by the III additional district consumer disputes redressal forum, recently.
Umang Agarwal, a 26-year-old resident of Banashankari Second Stage, had filed a petition on May 11, 2010 before the redressal forum and prayed it to direct the airlines to refund his airfare amount of Rs26,387, along with compensation of Rs50,000 for the mental agony caused and the harassment he underwent.
However, the court dismissed his petition after hearing the airlines’ version. The airline stated that the passenger did not mention his preference while booking the ticket online, and failed to give any information about his health condition. It further said that it is the passenger’s duty to mention the meal preference and also his health problem, while booking the ticket.
In his complaint, Agarwal said that he had reserved a ticket in Kingfisher Airlines on September 12, 2009, totravel from London to Bangalore. He paid Rs26,387 towards the fare. About an hour after the flight departed from London, he was served a vegetarian meal. Later in the morning, when breakfast was being served, he was informed by the cabin crew that vegetarian food on-board was over and only non-vegetarian food was available. He refused the non-vegetarian food and requested them to arrange for vegetarian food.
