Firefighters' reward may be enhanced nine times more

Mangalore: Firefighters, part of fire fighting and rescue operations, post IX812 crash at Kenjar on May 22, 2010, stand a good chance of getting more than just a pat on their backs for the service rendered on the fateful day. While then DGP (fire and emergency services) Jija Hari Singh announced a reward of Rs 10,000 to the 106 firefighters involved in the operations, it meant that some of them got Rs 150 as their share of reward. This could now change for the better.
Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services (KSFES) has sent a proposal to the department of home seeking a substantial enhancement of the reward. B G Changappa, director, KSFES, said: "If the proposal is accepted, the firefighters will be appreciated for their work through an earlier reward, get an amount some eight to nine times what they have already received. The exact amount each firefighter would get will depend on our proposal being accepted," he noted.
Incidentally, Changappa, who had rushed to the site of the air crash and was among the 106 fire personnel on the ground that day, said the DGP has powers to grant Rs 10,000 as reward for any particular act.
