In-line baggage scanning trials on

Chennai: The in-line baggage scanning system at the international terminal of Chennai airport has started trial operations and will be fully functional by the end of May. With this system, international passengers need not scan their baggage prior to check-in.
The in-line baggage scanning system is part of a four-layer foolproof security system. Once in-line baggage scanning is in place, passengers can directly walk up to the check-in counter and hand over bags that need to be checked in.
Bags that are checked in will be automatically be screened by two X-ray machines on conveyor belts and will be segregated if suspicious items are found. The isolated bags will be put through a standby scanner and moved along the conveyor to a designated area where explosive detection tests will be conducted and passengers may be summoned to explain the content. The X-raying of the bags can be monitored from six stations.
The trials have thrown up minor glitches that are being solved now, said airport director E P Hareendranath.
"We are integrating new software into the existing system. So, this requires extensive trials. Now, bags scanned by the passengers on the X-ray scanning machines prior to checking in are once again scanned as the baggage passes through conveyor belts from the check-in counter to the point from where they are collected for loading into the aircraft," he added.
