Ground handling staff sit idle at airport

Ahmedabad: Jobs of more than 200 employees of Karnataka Commercial & Industrial Corporation Private Limited, a ground-handling agent for Air India at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel airport, is at stake. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has restricted staff from entering the airport because the firm’s clearance certificate has not been renewed.
BCAS is the regulatory authority for civil aviation security in India. It issues clearance certificates to various agencies that function at the airport.
At midnight on Tuesday, KCIC’s clearance certificate expired. The firm is a ground handling agent for 13 airports in the country. Expiry of licence meant that no KCIC employee anywhere in the country will be allowed to enter airports for work.
KCIC has been operating at Ahmedabad airport since 2004. The firm is currently the ground handling agency for Air Arabia, Singapore and Air India. They also look after other diverted and non-schedule flights.
