SilkAir to land in Kolkata next month

Kolkata: On American Independence Day, a new carrier will touch down at Kolkata airport. SilkAir - regional wing of Singapore Airlines - will commence its thrice-a-week service between Kolkata and Singapore from July 4 with flights every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Parent company Singapore Airlines operates to Kolkata four times a week on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
SilkAir will touch down in Kolkata at 10.35pm and take off at 11.50pm, utilizing the very slot that is used by Singapore Airlines. However, the fare on SilkAir flights is likely to be 15-20% lower than Singapore Airlines given the latter's positioning as a premier airline. At present, the return fare to Singapore is Rs 20,000-26,000. Though SilkAir is also a full-service carrier, its positioning is a lower than the parent carrier.
Singapore Airlines has already announced a decision to introduce a low-cost airline sometime next year that will service long-haul routes and medium routes like India. Till that time, SilkAir will woo medium-haul passengers to Singapore and other destinations in South-East Asia while Singapore Airlines will try to rope in long-haul passengers flying onward to Far East or west coast of US.
