Woman pilot sues union against her expulsion

Chennai: A senior woman commander (flight pilot) with Air India has filed a civil suit, seeking to declare her suspension from the Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA) as null and void. The Madras high court on Wednesday granted an interim stay on the ICPA resolution suspending Captain M Deepa.
Deepa submitted that she was victimised as she did not participate in the pilot strike during April-May this year called by ICPA. Her membership was suspended and she was expelled from the union and a resolution to this effect was at the general body meeting on May 15, 2011.
Currently the only lady commander in Chennai, she said that she worked during the strike period keeping the interest of the travelling public in mind. Air India had also suffered huge revenue losses running to several crores due to the strike, she said.
Two others, Captain K Vijay and first officer Vivek C Karun, who did not participate in the strike, were also removed from membership of the association along with her, Deepa said.
