Madurai airport all set to get international flights

Madurai: Madurai airport is poised for a major leap with the decks being cleared for the operation of international flights.
Airports Authority of India (AAI) chairman V P Agarwal, who was in Chennai on Sunday, said that the Union finance ministry had issued an order acknowledging the Madurai airport as a customs airport. The next step is to establish customs counters that facilitate loading and unloading of baggage in overseas flights. The immigration counters are also mandatory if international flights are to operate from Madurai.
"The notification declaring Madurai airport as customs airport was issued by the Centre in January. Subsequently we started the works facilitating the establishment of customs counters. Now, space for customs as well as immigration counters has been earmarked. As many as ten immigration counters are likely to come up at the airport," said airport controller K Sankiah Pandian.
