Offset deals with Airbus questioned

New Delhi: The CAG has questioned the deals signed as part of the offset agreements from whom Indian Airlines bought 43 planes for Rs 8,399 crore. Airbus had to create a training centre in India at an investment of $75 million and also assist in creation of a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility that was to be set up with other promoters at the cost of $100 million.
CAG says that the commitments were "quite open-ended". "Unlike other clauses, there was no mention of a timeframe by which such facilities will be created. In respect of MRO, the wording 'facilitate creation of MRO facilities in India in association with promoters" did not give commitment of a binding commitment.
