Mumbai: It was quite a good haul for the Airport Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs department as about 30 people were caught and fined for carrying dutiable goods above the permissible limit at the Mumbai International airport in one night.
The passengers arrived on flights that landed on Monday night and in the wee hours of Tuesday morning. "We see an increase in instances of people carrying dutiable goods beyond allowed limits during the festive season and so we keep an increased vigil," said additional commissioner (AIU) Mahendra Pal, adding that most of the people were carrying electronic goods like televisions, music systems and players, etc. A Customs source said, "At least 30 passengers were fined for evading duty. The quantum of fine varies depending on the price of the goods," the source said.
