Economy focus may cost Jet Airways dear — in yields

New Delhi: Jet Airways has decided to reduce the number of business class seats on its aircraft and thereby increase its economy class inventory as pressure piles up on yields or the net revenue per seat. For the record, the airline is in the midst of rebranding JetLite (an all economy low cost offering) as Jet Konnect (economy plus some business class seats) so that in future it would have a single low-cost brand while Jet remains the full-service brand.
Going by sources, the airline has been systematically increasing Jet Konnect flights, which offer low-cost economy and business class seats and has brought down the business class seats to just eight seats per aircraft for at least 50% of its fleet.
“Business class component of travel is decreasing, so we have reduced it across the fleet. Earlier, we had two variations —- eight or 16 —- business class seats across domestic and international operations, but in the last few months, at least 50% of the fleet has been brought to the eight business class seat format. This obviously means we have more economy class seats on offer now,” said a source.
