New Delhi: Small airports in tier 2 and tier 3 across the country in the next decade will be required to cater to the ever increasing growth in the civil aviation sector.
The sector is expected to grow by at least 10 per cent from the present 26 per cent.
This was the common thought at a summit on civil aviation, focussed on the need for regional connectivity and airports in tier 2 and tier 3 cities across the country.
“Public private participation has shown how the country can develop the much needed infrastructure. In the next decade, 600 million people will migrate to urban areas. What needs to be done is to get urbanisation to the hinterland rather than hinterland coming to urban areas,” Umesh Baveja, chair, Regional Airport Holding International (RAHI) said in his address at the summit.
Baveja’s organisation has been mandated to develop airports at Shimoga and Gulbarga.
He said in the next 15 years, of the 370 airports that the country is looking to develop for intra-state connectivity, 360 will come up in smaller cities as these airports will provide the required connectivity to the metropolitan centres.
Baveja said the airports that are being developed will not only cater to civil aviation activities but will also house a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility and also an aeronautical university so as to generate more revenues.
