Mumbai: Black-and-yellow taxis at the domestic airport have threatened to go on a strike on Friday morning to protest against the inauguration of a stand for private prepaid share AC taxis to Pune.
The new taxis, most of which will be six-seater Innovas, will ply passengers on a share-basis directly from the airport to Pune. The fare has been fixed as Rs 375 per person and an extra Rs 195-for toll tax-to be shared among the passengers. The Mumbai-Pune Taxi Owners' Association will flag off the service at 10am on Friday. Association general secretary Shankar Shetty said the taxis would not be fitted with meters. "It is a point-to-point service and the black-and-yellow taxi drivers do not need to feel threatened. We will not ply within the city," he said.
Members of the taxi unions here are, however, furious. Mumbai Taximen's Union president A L Quadros said, "The Mumbai-Pune share taxis have a designated stand at Dadar TT. and they have been operating for several years. Why do they want to encroach upon our prepaid stand at the airport?
