Initiative to get international air connectivity for Madurai

Madurai: Members of Parliament, N.S.V. Chitthan (Dindigul) and B. Manicka Tagore (Virudhunagar) would take up the issue of having bilateral treaties, with other countries to enable direct international flight services from Madurai to foreign destinations, with the Centre.
Speaking at an interactive session organised by the Travel Club here on Saturday night, Mr. Chitthan promised to get the formalities done at the earliest so that there were international operations from Madurai airport by next fiscal.
Mr. Tagore asked the Travel Club to identify all the foreign destinations for which the bilateral treaties had to be made. He stressed the need to start international operations to prove that Madurai too was a profitable route. The Travel Club should be able to convince the airline operators with their figures of international passengers originating from the southern districts.

Around 20 per cent to 40 per cent of the international passengers boarding international flights from Chennai, Tiruchi and Thiruvananthapuram airports were from the southern districts. It included foreign tourists, workers and professionals employed in the Gulf, South East Asia, Europe and the US.
