Kolkata: In order to prevent Mumbai-like terror attacks, the Indian Navy is preparing to undertake enhanced surveillance along the coastal cities.
West Bengal, which has a lengthy coastline, is vulnerable to such attacks and the Navy has decided to operate unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from an air enclave it proposes to set up at the Behala Flying Club here.
"We found that we need round-the-clock surveillance along the coastline. It is the key to maritime security. For this, Behala is ideally suited because it is close to the coastline. It also has the space to develop the necessary infrastructure," said the Naval Officer-in-Charge of the Eastern Region, Commander B.A. Thomas.
The UAVs, besides monitoring the coastline, will also monitor movements of Indian ships to prevent them from entering the waters of neighboring countries.
