Ahmedabad: Customs officials at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport recently caught a Bharuch-based youth when he returned from Australia with ten iPhones hidden inside his pockets. The value of these brand new iPhones is said to be Rs 5.5 lakh in the Indian market.
"In terms of value, the case is a minor one, but the modus operandi is something we have been noticing frequently these days. In this case, the iPhones brought by the student were sold in Australia as part of an AT&T scheme. These schemes are relatively much cheaper than buying an iPhone piecemeal," said a customs official.
According to officials the student (identity withheld) bought these phones under the schemes for as low as 10 to 15 Australian dollars (AUD). He not only duped the company but was also found evading customs duty as these phones are high-end products and sell for a bomb in India.
Sources said that in recent times there has been a strong rise in smuggling of high-end electronic gadgets into the country through this method.
