Day-long fast planned at Aranmula on Sunday

Pathanamthitta: The People’s Action Council at Aranmula attached to Mallappuzhasserry Palliyoda Karayogam is to organize a day-long fast at Aranmula Tharayilmukku on Sunday, protesting against the proposed private international airport project at Aranmula.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, the action council leaders, K.S.Suresh, R. Geethakrishnan, Induchoodan, Vijayan Achari and K.Appukkuttan Nair, said the fast would be the beginning of a popular agitation against the controversial airport project and related unscientific development schemes.
The action council leaders alleged that the so-called development proposals in the name of an airport project would destroy the rich cultural heritage centres in Aranmula which is regarded as one of the three major heritage villages in the State. The United Nations Development Programme has identified Aranmula as a heritage village taking its rich cultural moorings and rusticity into consideration and the propagators of the airport project were out to destroy this in the name of development, they alleged.
Mr Suresh said half of the 170-acre Aranmula puncha (paddy field) has already been converted in the name of the proposed airport and it require conversion of not less than another 400 acres of waterlogged paddy fields as part of the execution of the project.
