ILS proves ineffective, fog paralyses flight operations

Chandigarh: The foggy weather has just set in the city and the Instrument Landing System (ILS) installed at the local airport has proved completely ineffective and failed to enable commercial aircraft land in poor visibility.
Since the new system has some limiting factors like training to commercial aircrew and available paraphernalia with commercial operators, it is not possible to land aircraft in case the visibility is below 1,200 metres, which is common in Chandigarh between mid December and January end.
On January 11, 2011, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) had installed the ILS after removing the 15-year-old obsolete ILS. Earlier, commercial aircraft at the had to either go back to Delhi or were cancelled when visibility used to be below 3km.
