Operator plans three-phase closure of Bangalore airport from March 5

New Delhi/Bangalore: Bangalore, which is the busiest airport in south India, could see disruption in domestic and international flights for two months beginning early March. This follows the Bangalore airport operator weighing the option of closing the airport for 58 days beginning March 5,to undertake repair of the runway.
Industry sources told Business Line that the airport operator has now decided to go in for a three-phase closure. “The first phase will be from March 5 to March 10 when there will be no runway closure. The second phase is from March 11 to April 7 when runway will be closed from 10-30 a.m. to 5-30 p.m. The month-long phase-III begins from April 8 when the runway will be closed from 10-30 p.m. to 5.30 a.m.,” an airline official said.
In December, the airport handled more than 350 flights a day, averaging about 35,000 passengers daily.
Earlier, the airport operator had proposed closing the airport from February 25 to 14 April or for about 55 days. “The airport operator has said that the new proposal will see little inconvenience for domestic flights,” an airline official said.
