Mumbai: A senior doctor from the Tata Memorial Hospital has written a letter to Mumbai Airport authorities apprising them of violations of fire safety norms within the airport.
In the letter, Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi, associate professor of the head and neck department of TMH and a joint secretary with Action Council against Tobacco, pointed out that how the smoking lounge blocks, nearly a third of the sole emergency exit in the entire complex, clearlyviolated fire safety norms.
Moreover, he wrote, the airport’s cigarette shop does not display a warning sign containing a picture of mouth cancer, with accompanying text. As per the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Product Act, every tobacco shop must display a 3X2 feet warning display at the point of sale.
The letter emphasised that the whole purpose of smoke-free public places was not only to safeguard the health of non-smokers, but also to promote temporary cessation of the habit among smokers. Having a cigarette shop in a public place completely defies the purpose, it stated.
