With the assurance from civil aviation minister Ajit Singh on Thursday to pay February salary to Air India staff by March 31, the threat of a strike from April two receded.
According to a senior Air Corporation Employees Union (ACEU) office bearer, during a meeting of the representatives of trade unions, Singh also promised to clear all salary linked arrears to employees of the cash-strapped airlines by May this year.
Singh also said the government is making all efforts to trim Air India’s employee and operating costs. “The minister has assured that from June 2012 onwards salaries of AI employees would be given on time on monthly basis,” an Air India union leader who was present at the meeting told Financial Chronicle.
While the AI employee payment cycle is falling back by a month, the government is making all efforts to ensure that payments apart from basic salaries including product-linked incentives (PLIs), a critical component of AI employee salaries, are paid to all employees by the end of May.
