Saab's remote-controlled ATCs

Hyderabad: Conventional Air Traffic Control (ATC) Towers could soon be passé and remote-controlled towers the ‘in thing' if Swedish giant Saab has its way.
It is possible to manage air traffic in multi-location airports from a single remote tower, which is fully equipped with necessary gadgets, says Saab, the security and defence systems company.
The first system is going operational in Sweden in August, 2012. One system is on trial in Australia and in Norway, “We are talking to India for the possibility of adapting it,” said Mr Michael Sahlberg of Saab India Technologies.
The remote tower-based ATC system will have high resolution digital cameras, pan-tilt camera with zoom capabilities, video encoding, microphones, signal light gun, meteorological sensors and integrated towers systems (lights, navigational aids, distress alarms etc). The controller working position is equipped with the same controls as in a normal ATC now.
