Chopper crash-lands atop building in Bangalore

Bangalore: A helicopter belonging to the HAL’s flying academy made an emergency landing atop a residential building in the thickly populated GM Palya area of Bangalore on Thursday.
Though the chopper hit a wall and was damaged, both pilots as well as residents of the four-storey building escaped unhurt. On landing, one of the rotors struck a parapet on the terrace, causing the helicopter to fall on its side — but it failed to cause an explosion.
The Schweizer-300C helicopter, flown by Air Commodore (Retd) R Assey, instructor at Rotary Wing Academy along with trainee Capt Digvijay Singh from Army Aviation Corps, landed on Maithri Opulence apartments near BEML Kalyana Mantap.
The helicopter, which took off at 2.30 pm from the academy owned by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, flew for two hours and ten minutes before making emergency landing.
“The pilot controlled the helicopter to make an emergency landing on top of the building as there was no open place available in the vicinity, where he could have landed immediately,” HAL in a statement.
