Destiny of world-class airport hangs in balance

Ranchi: The fate of a world-class integrated airport terminal building, which is almost ready at Ranchi's Birsa Munda airport, hangs in the balance as the road leading to the terminal building has not been constructed yet, owing to opposition from the army.
"The army has made ownership claims on the land on which the proposed approach road was to be constructed and forcibly stopped work at the site," said airport general manager (project) VVG Raju.
No headway has been made in the issue in the past one year. Ultimately chief secretary S K Chaudhary stepped in to resolve the matter. "I have written a letter to the Union defence ministry but I am yet to get any response," said Chaudhary. The land has to be handed over by the army to Airports Authority of India (AAI) for construction.
Choudhary has held several meetings with state civil aviation secretary V K Singh, AAI officials and army representatives in the past. Army's defence estate officer in Danapur Cantonment, that looks after issues relating to the land owned by the army, refused to comment on the issue.
