Chennai: The response to the H1N1 virus screening centres was lukewarm on day 1. Of the several lakh people arriving in the city via the airport and Central and Egmore railway stations on Sunday, just 300 people volunteered to get examined.
Health and corporation officials hope the numbers will increase from Monday following announcements on loudspeakers and in the media. One passenger at Egmore station was asked to do a throat swab test at King Institute.
The corporation along with government medical colleges began screening passengers on instructions from health minister V S Vijay. A table was set up in front of the departure and arrival boards at railway stations and outside the arrival terminal at the airport. Each centre was manned by six doctors.
At Central station, despite announcements every half an hour asking people with colds, coughs, sore throats or fever to get themselves examined, passengers were intent on leaving. "If my mother or I have a problem we will visit our family doctor," said Inder Kumar, who had arrived from Bangalore.
