Man held at SVPI airport with 135 gold chains

Ahmedabad: Customs officials at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Friday morning arrested a man with 135 gold chains weighing around 1.20 kg and worth Rs 35 lakh. The man, identified as Shabir Ismail Lokhandwala, 49, was first stopped by customs sepoy RV Desai after the latter suspected some suspicious behaviour on the passenger's part.
Sources at the airport said 135 gold chains were found from Lokhandwala, who was passing through the green channel. "It was hidden in a secret pocket inside his trousers. Further inquiry revealed that he had been carrying the packet of gold jewellery from Dubai to be delivered in India," said sources at the airport. Sources said that investigation is on to find out the receiver of the consignment. The passenger, who had arrived at the airport by a Fly Dubai flight, claimed to have been flying to India every month to deliver such packets for a charge of Rs 40,000.
