New Delhi: The Supreme Court has issued notices to private airline SpiceJet for forcibly deplaning Jeeja Ghosh, a Kolkata-based teacher with cerebral palsy, on her way to an international conference in Goa. Ghosh moved the apex court accusing the airline of treating her in a discriminatory manner, subjecting her to trauma, owing to which she could not attend the conference.
A bench of Justices Aftab Alam and Ranjana P Desai also issued notices to the Union government and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
Ghosh has asked the apex court to direct “SpiceJet to adequately compensate the petitioner for loss of money, wasted time and the humiliation and trauma suffered during the unsavoury incident”.
Ghosh and her joint petitioner in the case, NGO Able Disable All People Together (ADAPT, formerly Spastics Society of India), have contended in the SC that Ghosh’s case is not an isolated instance, and disabled persons have been invariably treated in a humiliating manner by airlines in the past.
