The Air India management has referred 100 striking pilots to the Director General of Civil Aviation [DGCA] for medical examination, who have been on sick leave for more than 15 days.
The AI management has already sacked striking 101 pilots, affiliated to the Indian Pilots Guild [IPG]. According to the IPG, a total of 424 out of the 444 pilots are on strike.
With the AI management now referring 100 pilots to the DGCA, things could get difficult for the IPG pilots even if they want to resume work. According to their service rules, if any pilot is on sick leave for more than 14 days, then the pilot has to get a clearance of a full medical board to resume work. And if the past instances are anything to go by, to get a full medical board clearance, it can take anywhere between a fortnight and several months.
