India's domestic air travel growth crashes

New Delhi: From one of the fastest growing domestic aviation markets globally, India has now witnessed significant slowdown in its once sunrise sector.
International Air Transport Association's (IATA) latest global traffic results for May, 2012, domestic air travel in India rose by just 0.1% year-over-year, but fell 2.7% compared to last April. This is in sharp contrast to almost double digit growth the country was recording ever since the advent of low cost carriers five years ago.
"Japan experienced the strongest (domestic) traffic growth, up 14.8% year-on-year. Brazil experienced the strongest growth after Japan, with traffic up 7.2%. China's domestic demand has slowed to growth rates last seen in early 2011. This reflects a slowdown across the Chinese economy. Traffic rose 4.4%," the IATA report said, adding that American domestic demand slipped 0.1% in May.
