New Delhi: Gleaming new airports may have come up in metros but India now faces the prospect of crowded and way below capacity airports incoming years unless infrastructure development keeps pace with requirement. The Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) has found that India is under-prepared for the growth challenges ahead and will need to invest up to $40 billion in airport development by 2025, including the construction of up to 50 green field airports.
CAPA estimates airport passenger traffic will grow from 143 million in 2010-11 to 452 million by 2020-21. Over this period, scheduled airline fleet is expected to grow from 430 to 1,030 aircraft, while general aviation could see even faster growth from 750 to over 2,000 aircraft. A GDP growth rate of 8% has been assumed for making the projections.
