Air India to pursue Star Alliance, but airlines group non-committal

New Delhi: A year after being overlooked by global airline grouping Star Alliance, Air India is determined to pursue the Lufthansa-led alliance for a membership, saying it will not woo other such alliances.
"Air India is still looking at Star Alliance and feels that it must take us as our performance data is better than others and better than ever. We approached it last week emphasising this and that we are as good as any of its members," Air India CMD Rohit Nandan told ET. According to Nandan, Star Alliance is the best fit for Air India in comparison with other airline groupings.
However, Jet Airways has now formally applied to the government for permission to join the German carrier Lufthansa-led alliance, which has United Airlines, Singapore Airlines, SWISS, Air China and Turkish Airlines among its members. It has also struck a much larger code share deal with Lufthansa as compared with what exists with Air India.
