Airports, airline spar over funding self check-in kiosks

New Delhi: In yet another indicator of the frail financial health of Indian aviation, airlines and airports are currently engaged in a debate over who should pay for installing self check-in kiosks at airports. The "who's poorer" argument broke out recently when managements of metro airports started asking airlines to install self check-in counters to reduce serpentine lines at the check-in counters where someone else gives a passenger the boarding card.
Airlines, on their part, loved the idea but asked airports to install the machine -- each of which costs upwards of Rs 3-4 lakh. Airports are insisting that they did install some machines at metros and now it is up to airlines to do this job at their expense. Both of them cite their financial health for asking the other to spend money for these machines and the debate is still on.
