Teen, father held for smuggling Rs72 lakh

Mumbai: A 17-year-old boy and his father were on Thursday held by the air intelligence unit of the Mumbai airport customs for smuggling Rs72 lakh and iridium powder worth Rs60 lakh. The powder is used to polish and enhance the weight of gold.
The incident took place when the teenager, a resident of Ahmedabad, boarded a Jet Airways flight to Dubai. The minor, a college student, was offloaded by the airline staff after they noticed powder in his luggage. He was later frisked by customs officers led by Sameer Wankhede, assistant commissioner of customs.
The officers found Rs72 lakh covered in rectangular packets at the bottom of the boy’s bag. “He covered the currency notes with ripe tamarinds to ensure that if anybody touched it, they would remove their hands immediately because of the sticky pod-like fruit,” said a senior customs officer.
