Mumbai: One of the most sensitive locations in the city, the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, remained unmanned for almost four hours on Wednesday following a tiff between Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel and custom officers. The airport was exposed to security risks as there were no checks at gate numbers 1 and 6 between 3pm and 7pm.
The CISF personnel stopped checking passengers entering and exiting the two gates after two of its vehicles were stopped for security checks. Gate number 1 is the arrival area of the airport while gate number six is the entrance to the tarmac area.
Custom officials said they got a tip-off that gold and objectionable material like contraband (drugs) were being smuggled into the airport premises in a government vehicle. “As a result, we began checking all vehicles entering gate numbers 1 and 6. Two CISF vehicles — one leaving the gate and the other entering the premises — were also stopped,” a senior custom officer told DNA. “One of the vehicles did not have the pass to enter the airport while the pass of the other car had expired.”
