Dhalla demands restoration of Amritsar-Toronto flight

Patiala: Ahead of the visit of Canadian prime minister, Punjabi-origin Canadian politician Ruby Dhalla has sought the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for early restoration of the Air India's Amritsar-Toronto flight and expediting clearance of international flights from Mohali airport for
facilitating the non-resident Indians, especially Punjabis living in Canada and UK.
In a communiqué to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and union civil aviation minister Ajit Singh, Dhalla pleaded that many of the NRIs were facing difficulties due to the lack of direct flight between Amritsar and Toronto. "With more than 63% of passengers checking in at the Delhi airport belonging to Punjab, it is imperative for the government of India to facilitate their movement by starting more direct international flights from Amritsar and expedite clearance of international flights from the upcoming Mohali airport," Dhalla said. She brought to the notice of the PM that progress of the Mohali airport was quite slow and it needed to be expedited.
"Many from the Punjabi NRI diaspora in Canada and the UK have contacted me and raised the issue of lack of direct connectivity to Punjab. They want early restoration of flights from Canada and the UK to Amritsar," Dhalla said in a press release issued here.
