Departure slots at airports to be auctioned

Mumbai: Airfares on flights operated during peak hours is likely to go up in the coming year as the government has planned to auction departure slots at congested airports. Because of consistent increase in air traffic, some major airports of the country have reached peak capacity and so the ministry of civil aviation has reasoned that it should hold auctions for allocation of vacant peak hour slots.
The auction will be undertaken on an experimental basis, said a release issued by the press information bureau. Departure slots are allocated by the respective airport operators, i.e., Airports Authority of India (AAI) in case of airports managed by them and JVC Operators for airports managed by them in accordance with the Guidelines issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation in line with IATA World Slot Guidelines (WSG).
