India discounts 'stronger measures' over Maldives-GMR spat

Following the contentious termination of the 25 year contract of GMR Infrastructure Limited by the Maldives, the Indian government has decided not to adopt stronger measures for now and deal with the situation through diplomacy.
According to a report on Moneycontrol, the Cabinet Committee on Security, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, considered the developments surrounding termination of the contract and its possible wider consequences.
The report indicates fears by India that the cancellation of the contract was a result of anti-India sentiments in the Maldives.
During the meeting the Indian government has reviewed the overall relationship with the Maldives at the highest level and discussed various options in view of anti-India sentiment that could hurt India's interests "directly", the report quoted sources.
The meeting was told that anti-India sentiment exists in Maldives among a small section but such people are even in the government.
In view of this, India is not ruling out the possibility of its interests being hurt "directly", a reference to its citizens or assets being harmed, the sources said.
