International airline body slams steep airport charges

Montreal-based International Air Transport Association, the global trade body of airlines, has written to Indian regulators complaining about “unfair” trade practices followed by the authorities of the Mumbai airport.
In a 12-page letter, the association has criticised the GVK-led Mumbai International Airport Ltd’s (MIAL) decision to demand steep landing fees and other charges from airlines in a bid to recoup costs of development projects underway at the airport.
The letter has been sent to the secretary of Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) of India, Capt Kapil Chaudhary. MIAL has urged AERA to increase landing, parking and navigation charges for domestic and international carriers by a staggering 880 per cent. It has also sought a substantial increase in user development fee paid by passengers.
