DRI seizes Rs 70cr private jet

Ahmedabad:  In an alleged import duty evasion case, pharma major Cadila Healthcare and textile and plastic firm Sintex Industries have been caught on the wrong foot while importing an aircraft. Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials seized a business jet - a Challenger 604 - owned by Zest Aviation Pvt Ltd (ZAPL), a Zydus Group and Sintex Industries backed company.
The Rs 70-crore aircraft had been imported from Canada by ZAPL in June last year and was used by Zydus Group chairman Pankaj Patel to reach distant facilities in Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim.
DRI has asked the company to pay Rs 11 crore as import duty on the aircraft. Sources said the aircraft was imported declaring it would be used to run a charter operation, but was used as a private jet.
