Guwahati: The Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has started a comprehensive survey around the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) in Guwahati to detect unauthorized constructions in the are. Filling up of natural drains for construction purposes caused artificial floods in the LGBIA area in the last rainy season, with parts of the airport remaining submerged for over a week.
The GMDA authorities said the study was initiated as part of a new master plan for the LGBIA area. "GMDA has constituted three teams to study the development that have taken place in the areas surrounding the LGBIA. Earlier, there were many natural drains that used to carry out excess water from the airport area. But in recent years, the airport has been facing a problem of artificial flooding, which is why the GMDA has initiated the study," said M Angamuthu, chief executive officer of GMDA.
