Surat: Private agency to scare away birds on runway

Surat: With a view to tackle the bird-hit problem at the airport, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has decided to hire a professional agency for taking up the job of scaring away the avians for smooth operations of flights.
AAI has issued tender for the bird hazard control inside the operational area of Surat airport. The scope of work include scaring of the birds by bursting of crackers, shot launcher with cartridges in operational area and laser gun.
Airport director SD Sharma said, "The airport area is close to Tapi river and there are many shrimp ponds in the vicinity, which attract the migratory waterfowls. There has been only one incident of bird-hit on the airport, but we are taking extra precautions for safety."
