Airport intruders, get ready for a big shock

The Mumbai airport’s notoriously porous perimeter wall, which between 2007 and 2010 witnessed eight to ten breaches a year, is being fitted with electrified fencing to keep off intruders.
The Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) began installing the Perimeter Intrusion Detection System (PIDS) in December last year and the work is now in its last phase.
Last Saturday, officials of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, the Intelligence Bureau, and the Mumbai police were briefed about the new fencing. The electrified fence on the 10.3 km boundary wall, which at several places touches sprawling hutment colonies, is likely to be switched on in a couple of month’s time.
