'Plan airport metro on priority'

Mumbai: MMRDA has asked the state government to set up a dedicated high-speed Metro connectivity to Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) on a priority basis.
MMRDA, the special planning authority for the airport's site development, has finalized a development plan for the first phase of its expansion, which has been submitted to the government for approval. "The absence of a dedicated Metro connectivity forced passengers to travel by road, resulting in congestion of all junctions around the airport," the MMRDA report says. It further claims that the pressure on the existing suburban transportation systems leads to increase in travel time, impacting the airport's efficiency and potential as a global aviation hub. "The 25-km distance from Nariman Point to the international airport takes anywhere between 60-120 minutes at present."
