Encroachment threat to Borjhar airport

Guwahati: The Borjhar airport in the city is facing a serious threat due to the encroachment on the natural channels and water bodies in its vicinity, said State’s Water Resources Department (WRD) Minister Rajiv Lochan Pegu while replying to the debate on the demand of his Department for grant.
The Minister said that the Airport Authority of India is contacting the WRD with pleas to do away the threat. The threat is such that from the ensuing summer the airport may become unfit for landing of aeroplanes if the natural channels and water bodies in its vicinity are not freed from encroachment.
To get rid of the threat, the encroachment on the natural channels and water bodies in the vicinity of the airport should be removed and people in the neighbourhood of the aerodrome should cooperate with the authorities in this regard, the Minister said.
