Coimbatore: Sleuths from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 150 digital cameras and 25 mobile phones worth Rs65lakh from two passengers at the city airport early Monday morning. The consignment was smuggled from Sharjah to Coimbatore in an Air Arabia flight.
Acting on a tip-off, the sleuths detained A Shahul Hameed, 27 and Hanifa Ibrahim, 27, both hailing from Mahakavi Bharathi Nagar in Chennai, and seized the consignment from them. Both own shops in Chennai where they sell foreign goods.
Air Arabia flight arrived at the city airport around 4.15am on Monday with 151 passengers on board. Since all passengers of international flights have to go through immigration and customs, Shahul and Hanifa left their baggage in the restroom and waited till everyone had left. Customs officials smelled something suspicious and detained them.
