Mumbai: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the airport customs department on Saturday caught a poor, handicapped man who was being used to smuggle gold into the country. Gold ornaments worth over Rs2 lakh were seized from a tiffin box belonging to the accused.
According to Sameer Wankhede, assistant commissioner of customs, the 32-year-old accused, who is a Mira Road resident, had gone to Dubai to collect the consignment. He was allegedly offered an amount of Rs5,000 for the job. The accused was apprehended after he alighted from a Jet airways flight on Saturday night. The accused, while being interrogated, revealed that he belongs to a poor financial background. He said that he has tried his hand at several odd jobs, and has even gone to the Gulf, but his handicap always came in the way of his getting a well-paying job.
