New radars to make skies safer

Kolkata:  For several years, air traffic controllers at Kolkata airport have been on tenterhooks. Saddled with an outdated radar system, sudden snags have left them groping in the blind.
The good news is that the controllers will have to live with the aged radars for six months more when they will be replaced by advanced radar systems from Czech firm Eldis. The current primary and secondary radars were installed by American firm Westinghouse in 1997. According to Airports Authority of India member (air navigation surveillance) V Somasundaram, the new airport surveillance radar (ASR) and mono-pulse secondary surveillance radar (MSSR) have already been shipped from the Czech Republic.
