Proposal to split AAI for efficient operations

The Ministry of Civil Aviation is mooting a proposal to scrap Airport Authority of India (AAI) and carve out two different corporations out of it. The proposal is likely to be tabled during the monsoon session of the Parliament.
Well-placed sources within the AAI reveal that as per the new plan, two new entities would be the Airport Services Corporation(ASC) and the Air Navigation Services Corporation (ANSC). The ASC will concentrate on ground infrastructure developments such as terminal buildings, runways and their maintenance. The ANSC would be mandated to look into providing air traffic navigation systems and its technology related infrastructure. The new development would be similar to some foreign countries where airport developments and air traffic management are handled by different agencies. “A consultant is being hired to study its legal implications, after which it will be tabled in Parliament,” said a senior official from ministry of civil aviation. KN Srivastava, secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation was not available for comment as he is on a visit to Singapore.
