Customs agents' stir on, cargo piles up at city airport

Chennai: About 1,000 tonnes of in-bound cargo piled up at the international airport owing to the continuous agitation of the field staff of Customs House Agents (CHA) citing delay in cargo clearance, here on Saturday.
The International Air-Cargo handling was about 300 tonnes per day and it piled up to 600 tonnes on Saturday. A backlog of 400 tonnes was reported at the airport due to delay in clearance. The stir was provoked by various issues raked up by the customs officials and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) while clearing the cargo.
A field staff told Express that the poor operational efficiency of Bhadra International, the private firm in charge of cargo operations, had taken its toll on the cargo clearing to their clients.
