Kolkata: A malfunctioning automatic sliding glass door at the departure level of the new Kolkata airport terminal crashed on Friday afternoon when a CISF jawan tried to force it shut. The security personnel sustained minor injuries that were treated at the airport.
According to sources, the jawan posted at Gate No.2 of the departure level was walking down to the drinking water fountain when he noticed the glass door at Gate No.1 slightly ajar. Since the gate is not in operation, it is unmanned. The jawan, therefore, tried to shut it to ensure that no one slipped into or out of the terminal through the gap. The glass got dislodged from the channel and came crashing down.
"It could have been a major accident but fortunately, it wasn't. The jawan sustained minor cuts. Since the door had jammed, he tried to shut it of security concerns," the source said. This is the first instance of a glass breakage other than the one used in fixed panels.
